The Icons | Shoals Shirt

When Billy first introduced the Shoals Denim Shirt it ticked all the boxes for what great style meant to him: easy wearing, designed with unique details, and built to look better and better with every fade, fray, and mark (need proof? Just take a look at Billy’s original shirt, below). Here we break down why it’s been a foundational part of the collection for two decades, and how you can make it the cornerstone of your wardrobe.

The Backstory

Named after our home region of The Shoals here in Alabama, the Shoals Denim Shirt first appeared on the runway in the fall of 2001 as a versatile piece that could bridge the gap between workwear and tailored styles. It’s remained a staple of the collection ever since because, while many things have changed, its function has not.

The Design

With enough room for a tee or Henley underneath, the Shoals Denim Shirt was designed to fit like a shirt jacket while also being tailored enough to stand on its own. The shape of the pockets elongate the body, while the antique brass snaps feel substantial without being overwhelming. Perhaps best of all, we wash each of our Shoals Denim Shirt styles for that perfect, had-it-a-decade feel, whether you prefer your denim washed out, blacked out, or double dyed, (alternatively, we also offer it in 100% organic cotton twill). Plus, as a final touch, we add our signature ribbon stripe stitching to the left breast pocket.

The Look

A little bit workwear, a little bit western, this shirt never goes out of style because it's the utility knife of your closet. Want to dress down—while adding some unique personal style to—a suit or tux? Denim shirt. Looking for a rugged contrast to your street or sportswear? Denim shirt. Heading out to meet friends after weekend chores around the house? Denim shirt (for both). In short, the Shoals Denim Shirt looks great in any context because every look could benefit from a little denim.
