The Bond Peacoat

Whether you know it as the Billy Reid Peacoat, James Bond Peacoat, or simply the best men’s peacoat, this piece of luxury men’s outerwear has a rich history with us that dates all the way back to 2001.

Since its NYFW runway debut, this melton wool peacoat has been our best-selling garment of all time. To this day, we continue to riff on this jacket because it continues to serve as a big inspiration. Here’s a little background on its construction, beginnings, and rise to fame.

Why Is It Called the Bond Peacoat?

Despite its association with the James Bond film “Skyfall,” this piece of outerwear was named after our old New York shop on Bond Street.

What’s Special About the Peacoat’s Construction?

Originally the naval sailors donned long, double breasted coats. But, because they couldn’t climb in those coats while rigging the ship the sailors cut the garment at the waist.

As a callback to the silhouette’s naval roots, the Bond Peacoat is crafted with the traditional option of melton wool to help block wind and water and keep you warm. We added polyamide to our Bond Peacoat because it gives structure to the jacket. Without it, design aspects like button holes and pockets would eventually start to hang loosely.

These thoughtful design choices honor the garment’s history and take in account its future. It’s this kind of Italian craftsmanship that makes it a great men’s peacoat.

Where Is the Bond Peacoat’s Liner?

The Bond Peacoat is intentionally unlined as a mark of craftsmanship and to allow for easy movement. Keeping it unlined reduces bulk and shows off the completely finished seams and beautiful craftsmanship.

Plus, the melton wool is tightly woven so you won’t be sacrificing any warmth without a liner.

What Is the Connection With “Skyfall”?

Daniel Craig first bought the jacket at our Nashville shop prior to the announcement that he was going to star in the (at the time) latest James Bond film. Craig loved the Bond Peacoat so much that he asked the wardrobe stylist to use it in “Skyfall.”
