It’s the season of parties and Billy’s ready to bring his own flair to intimate gatherings and big bashes alike. We asked Billy about how he puts his own spin on hosting unforgettable celebrations.
Q: What’s your hosting style?
A: I like to keep it really simple, unpredictable, and comfortable.
Q: Is there a go-to dish you serve every holiday?
A: It’s a simple one, yet maybe odd to some. I grill a few pounds of Conecuh sausage and cut them into bites. There’s never one left over!
Q: Is there any band, genre, or playlist you like to play during this time of year?
A: Our house usually has an eclectic mix, so it can be anything from jazz to country to folk to hip hop. I love Ella Fitzgerald’s Christmas Album and, personally, Willie Nelson’s Stardust album reminds me of my grandmother’s house—so that gets some love during the holidays for sure.
Q: I heard about your famed eggnog punch. What’s the story behind it?
A: I found it in a Gentry Magazine from the 50’s. Old School! You put a half gallon of vanilla ice cream in a large serving bowl and pour bourbon, rum, and vodka on top of it and mix. Measure the booze to your own taste and potency. It certainly gets a spirited response.
Q: What do you like to wear when you’re hosting?
A: I like to keep it relaxed and casual. There’s usually a lot of activity around the cooking and the house prep, so comfort and function are key in those moments.
