Hailing from Seale, Alabama, artist Butch Anthony doesn’t fit into a singular box. His style, process, and manner of walking through life,collecting ephemera along the way, have long inspired Billy and countless others whose paths he’s crossed.
Much like its maker, Butch’s expansive collection of work—which he calls “The Museum of Wonder”—is intriguing, imaginative, distinctly southern, and wonder-filled, indeed.
A close friend to Billy and the brand for over two decades, we invited Butch to collaborate with us in designing a limited-edition capsule of hand-crafted pieces adorned in his creative musings. He settled on a definitive motif—the Yellowhammer, Alabama’s state bird—which is shown throughout the collection alongside creations by fellow artist and friend Bradley Gordon. In keeping with our shared Alabama roots, we partnered with local screen-printers to bring Butch’s designs to life on our iconic Shoals Denim Shirt, which were small-batch printed in two washes with only a limited number available.
Butch’s distinctive artwork embodies his unique spirit, which he describes as “intertwangleism”:
Intertwangleism, as an artistic style, is part cubism, part dada, part expressionism, part science, part spirit, and, not least of all, part tongue-in-cheek. It takes a thing and breaks it apart into its basic elements—not of science, but of another scheme found only in Butch Anthony’s mind.
