THE FOUNDATION SERIES

Part 1: The Style Uniform

Welcome to our ongoing series that defines style through the lens of the people that make up Billy Reid. We’re kicking it off with our senior design director, David, who has an everyday wardrobe worth canonization: it’s effortless, cool, and classic. We sat down with the designer to discuss his approach to style codes, closet curation, and storytelling through clothing to achieve that nonchalant, yet tailored look.

“For me, the way that I work is that I buy fewer things, but I buy quality. The pieces that we curate at Billy Reid we make to be very durable. Pieces that live a long time bring out the wearability. Buy them early and wear them in.”

HONOR A GARMENT'S HISTORY

“We’re an American brand so we should have denim elements in our design. Americana is known for denim, work wear, anything made from cotton. Think about where you are in the country and dress to that.”

WEAR PATTERNS AS A NARRATOR

“I love the chore jacket. Me and my fellow designer, Ellie, were buying the same chore coat and I told her she needs to go out and paint in it. Give it that personal touch because the rips and natural need for patching will be perfect and totally unique to her.”

TRUST YOUR TOUGH PIECES

“What you wear is supposed to go on the journey with you no matter what you’re doing. Luxury should be hard wearing and durable—not fashion. It should be elevated pieces that are relevant in design now and in 10-15 years.“

AN EMPHASIS ON LONGEVITY

“Basically I’ve got multiple t-shirts in all the colors and I wear the hell out of them until they’re full of holes and then I re-use them. Clothes are supposed to be worn. You’re not supposed to be worn by the clothes.”
