A Note From Billy Reid...

About Billy Reid About Billy Reid

My story begins in Amite, Louisiana, a town whose names means friendship. There, my mother ran a ladies’ clothing store, located in my grandmother’s old farm house from the 1920s, with a huge front porch and a big bay window. It was a place where these women would come gossip and hang out and buy a bunch of really cool clothes. When you walked in there, it felt like home.

When I started out back in 1998, I wanted to continue that tradition. I wanted people to come in our shops and hang out – to feel like you’re a welcome guest in our house. And I want that to be true whether you’re visiting us at our headquarters in Florence, Alabama, or at any of our stores around the country. Or right here at our online home.

As for what you’ll find here: I design things I want to wear, and that fit into my life. I like the outdoors and getting my hands dirty. I like old-fashioned techniques and have a love of antiques. I am a Southerner and that certainly influences my life and work. I love the cornbread I grew up eating (and am happy to share my favorite recipe). You can often find me listening to the great songs recorded by Aretha Franklin, the Black Keys and more, Just down the road at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals.

I am traditionalist at heart. I start with classic American clothing, and take it in a modern direction… that still stays true to the traditional. I think through every button, every thread, every stitch. Some people on our team call it considered clothing for the modern soul. I just call it good clothing, made with integrity so you can look and feel your best, no matter when and where you wear it. My name is on everything we make, and I take pride in that. I hope you will, too.

So I invite you to get comfortable, have a look around and to let me know if you’re looking for something particular, or just want to say hello.

Thank you for coming by.

A few other things we thought we should mention:

  • When the brand first began in 1998, it was known as William Reid.
  • Since Billy’s never been called “William” in his life, in 2001, we all decided to make things a little less formal and just go by Billy Reid.
  • That same year, Billy Reid was honored by the CFDA with the prestigious Perry Ellis award for the best emerging menswear designer. (The CFDA honored Billy again in 2010 and 2012, including an award for menswear designer of the year.)
  • In 2009, we started hosting an annual celebration of food, music and culture here in Florence, Alabama. It’s known as Shindig. It’s a fantastic time, and all are welcome. We hope we’ll see you there.
