Bring artisanal refinement to your look with this 100% cotton corded dobby grid check shirt. The plaid brings a nice pop of texture whether layered under a sport coat or worn alone. The shirt’s silhouette first debuted on the runway over a decade ago and we brought it back from the archive. Take notice of the two welt pockets at the chest: they’re a utilitarian design element you won’t typically find on a piece like this. Thoughtfully finished with mother-of-pearl buttons, tonal thread throughout, and our signature heirloom ribbon stripe at bottom underplacket.

    Havana Dreams

The Billy Reid Short Sleeve Corded Plaid Donelson Shirt is the sort of shirt that quietly reminds one how impoverished most contemporary menswear has become. So much modern clothing seems engineered either for adolescents clutching iced coffee in airport terminals or software billionaires attempting to disguise existential despair beneath performance fabric. Then along comes the Donelson Shirt, strolling in like a man who knows how to order rum properly.

What first distinguishes it is the grid. Not merely plaid—plaid is too rustic, too eager for pumpkin patches and televised football—but a disciplined windowpane geometry that feels almost architectural in temperament. The lines possess the calm authority of a Mies van der Rohe façade or the brass mullions of a mid-century hotel lobby in Havana before the revolution and the mildew. The pattern creates order without rigidity, which is one of the hardest tricks in design. It gives the shirt structure while still allowing the wearer to appear relaxed, slightly dangerous, and perhaps recently returned from somewhere with ceiling fans.

The corded texture is the real seduction. Billy Reid understands tactile intelligence better than nearly anyone in American fashion. The fabric has that faintly dry, ribbed hand that recalls vintage resort shirts discovered in the back of old Palm Beach haberdasheries—the kind of shirt one imagines was once worn by a novelist who drank too much and knew too many women named Elena. It catches shadow…
